Engine Pma Parts Market Hits Headwinds

AeroStrategy

[ASDWire]– A global engine MRO survey by AeroStrategy concludes that the growth rate of PMA parts for aeroengines is expected to slow as a result of the industry downturn and defensive measures by the OEMs during recent years. GE has been particularly active in its defense of the material flow on the GE and CFM engines. By allying with engine MRO providers such as Aveos, ST Aero and Iberia in return for long-term material agreements, GE has locked 17 percent of the material flow on GE/CFM engines on top of what it already controls via its own engine shops.

The Nautical Institute launches CPD

NauticalInstitute

A major initiative aimed at helping maritime professionals develop their careers and meet future industry requirements for personnel was launched today (Thursday) in London by The Nautical Institute (NI).

The continuing professional development (CPD) scheme developed by the NI is aimed at helping retention of seafarers and ensuring that they can further their careers at sea and ashore.

The industry has estimated that the shortfall of officers could reach 83,900 by 2012, against fleet requirements and has initiated campaigns to attract recruits – not least the Go to Sea campaign backed by the International Maritime Organization (IMO).

Gulf of Aden Pirate Corridor – New coordinates in effect

PiratePiratesGulfAdenPirateFlag

February to April are the months when most cruising sailors are going east to west across the Indian Ocean, and set out to transit the pirate infested Gulf of Aden. At this time of year the trade winds in the Red Sea are favorable, and a boat will reach the Mediterranean just in time for the European Spring. Between July to November during the SW trades is when yachts are likely to make the return journey from west to east. As this area has become notoriously famous for pirate attacks, a security corridor International Recommended Transit Corridor (IRTC) has been established, and boats are advised to travel in convoys. New coordinates came into effect on 0001Z 01 FEB 09 See Map & Full Details on transiting the Gulf of Aden pirate zone, by clicking on http://asianyachting.com/news/PirateCorridor.htm

Yachtsmen contemplating making the passage, are recommended to contact the MARLO (Maritime Liaison Office) in Bahrain for further advice on Tel: +00-973-3940-1395 or by e-mailing marlo.bahrain@me.navy.mil

EPI TP400 engine takes off – but will the 400M?

A400Mengineflight

The engine intended for the Airbus 400M finally took to the air in a US Lockheed C130. Seen above on the port inbound station.

The TP400 power-plant developed for the A400M by EuroProp International (EPI) took to the air for the first time on 17th December 2008 on the Lockheed C-130K flight test-bed. The TP400 is installed on the inner left engine mount of the C-130K which is otherwise powered by three of the usually four Allison T56 turbopropellers The aircraft took off at 10.44 local time from Cambridge airfield (UK) where Marshall Aerospace, which is conducting the flight test-bed trials, is based, and touched down at 11.59 local time. The flight lasted one hour and 15 minutes.

The A400M programme is now in deep trouble with the intended users looking at or already using Boeing C17 military airlift machines. If the project fails, Airbus Industries may be liable for penalty payments.

Maddest, Baddest Man in Town

BrownCartoon4

Bottler Brown (and sidekick Dobbin Darling) – the maddest, baddest man in town

In a last desperate throw of the dice, “Bottler” Brown orders the Bank of England to start printing money.

The bank bailout failed.

Dramatic interest rate cuts failed.

Six key policies claimed to be able to save the world were announced in December and have yet to be implemented.

Rushing round like a headless chicken failed.

Bullying smaller countries failed.

Sucking up to bankers failed.

Attacking bankers failed.

Claiming to be seeing “green shoots” of recovery failed.

So now its down to the last resort of banana republics – rolling the printing presses.

United Nations agencies partner with shipping corporations to minimize global environmental threat

rollover center

A Global Industry Alliance (GIA) was launched today (2 March, 2009) at the Headquarters of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) in London, to tackle the threats of marine bio-invasions caused by the transfer of alien plants and animals in ships’ ballast tanks.

The Alliance, made up of an innovative partnership between IMO, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and four major private shipping corporations, aims to harness the different skills and expertise brought by these groups in order to develop concrete solutions to this global environmental hazard.
