Tax reform moves one step closer and other things you need to know

The Senate GOP passed its tax reform bill in an early vote last Saturday. Jenny Beth said, “Tea Party Patriots Citizens Fund and our nationwide network of more than 3 million supporters commend the Senate for passing a tax reform bill. We appreciate the Senate included repeal of Obamacare’s individual mandate as a first step toward full repeal of Obamacare and it is critical that the provision is included in the final bill. We will be watching the conference between the House and Senate and will do everything we can to ensure the final bill that is sent to President Trump will lead to a simpler, flatter, and fairer tax system for all Americans.”

The Senate and the House are expected to go to a conference committee to reconcile the differences between the two bills. Once the conference is finished, both the House and Senate will have to each vote on a conference report in order to send a final bill to President Trump’s desk to be signed into law. Tax relief for Christmas would be a wonderful gift to the American people!

We thank everyone who has joined our Tax Reform Coalition with FreedomWorks to help President Trump pass this historic tax reform bill and if you haven’t joined the coalition yet, it’s not too late! Join our tax reform coalition to help us get tax reform accomplished by Christmas!

Yesterday, Congress passed a two-week funding bill to avoid a government shutdown. Congress will have to meet again to alter a budget deal before the end of the year. Democratic leaders say they won’t make a deal on a spending bill without a reinstatement of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. Allowing DACA to continue would be a huge mistake because it encourages illegal immigration to go on. Republicans must stand strong for the promises they made to voters in 2016, and fixing the illegal immigration problem should be a top priority.

Senator Al Franken (D-MN) announced his resignation on Thursday after several senators came out urging him to do so amid multiple allegations of sexual misconduct. The number of allegations of sexual misconduct against politicians in Washington, members of the media, and Hollywood celebrities is telling.

The revelations have sparked a demand for justice, accountability, and transparency everywhere, including Congress. Tea Party Patriots co-founder Jenny Beth Martin has been outspoken on the need for Congress to be transparent, especially when taxpayer dollars have been used to cover up allegations against Members of Congress and congressional staff. The congressional “Shush Fund” is a prime example of how tax dollars have been abused to sweep allegations of sexual misconduct under the rug while paying off the alleged victims with taxpayer funds.

If we continue to allow lawmakers to thrive in a “coverup” culture and pay for their actions through the Shush Fund or through congressional office funds, the real issue of sexual harassment may go unresolved. It’s time for accountability and transparency in Congress as well as everywhere else as we continue to see more and more people come forward.
