While the Government sits on its hands, GMB will continue to work hard to show that this country has a strong and productive manufacturing sector
GMB, the manufacturing union, says ministers hiding behind bureaucracy over the UK passport farce sends an appalling message to UK workers.
Following an Urgent Question raised in parliament by Liz Twist MP, the Government Home Office Minister, Caroline Noakes MP, was grilled by politicians over the government’s decision to award the contract to make the new British blue passports to a French company.
Stuart Fegan, GMB National Officer, said:
“What we heard from the Tory Minister today was more excuses hiding behind bureaucracy instead of standing up for the security of this country and the security of the UK manufacturing sector.
“It’s an utter farce that could be a scene from the TV Show Yes Minister!
“While the Government sits on its hands, GMB will continue to work hard to show that this country has a strong and productive manufacturing sector.
“There are 2.5 million people working in UK manufacturing and this Government is not only missing a great opportunity to boost jobs but is sending an appalling message to those workers, by choosing to award this contract outside of the UK.
“The Government should think again not just for De La Rue workers but for the whole of UK manufacturing.”
