Flag of the United Kingdom

Yesterday, June 23rd the British people made a historic decision to Leave the European Union. We, as a nation, have decided to re-assert our independencein the world to re-claim our democracy and once again take control of our own destiny. The Great British Public have delivered a positive message for Britain’s future. It is now up to us to ensure the Government, and our new Prime Minister – following David Cameron signalling his resignation today – behave responsibility and follow through on the referendum result and make sure Britain leaves the European Union as soon as possible.

David Cameron suggests a new Prime Minister will not be in place until October – in time for the Conservative Party Conference, but not – it seems – when is best for the United Kingdom! Cameron insists he will not be the one to negotiate the process of our withdrawal from the EU – and this will be a job for his successor. We believe this is really good news, as we are sick of ‘Project Fear’ and lies. For us, this is an unacceptable timescale. We cannot wait 4 months to begin re-asserting our freedom. The needs of the Conservative Party must not be put ahead of the needs of Great Britain!

Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty – which is suggested as the process by which we begin leaving the EU – MUST be activated, and the referendum result must be honoured to ensure we leave the EU as soon as possible. The longer this is allowed to drift, more and more excuses could be drummed up to attempt to ignore and manipulate the will of the people.

We will keep campaigning to ensure this is not allowed to happen and the referendum result is honoured.

Looking to the future, it is important we continue to pressurise the politicians. We have to make sure any trade deal with the EU is negotiated in Britain’s best interests. It must not include the full freedom of movement of people, when the British people have so clearly rejected it. Angela Merkel has made it clear in her speech earlier today that Germany wants to maintain a close relationship with Britain. We would to maintain a close relationship with Germany, one based on trade and mutual respect and cooperation, but not to be tied in to a single European Superstate with the EU. We want to be free to trade with the whole world and not be tied into this fading European Union at huge cost to our nation.

What we achieved in Britain last night, may just cause a tidal wave of change across the EU. In countries such as France, the Netherlands and Sweden, people are waking up to Brexit and demanding their own referendums. The President of France, François Hollande has called an emergency meeting of his own government to try and avert a French exit from the EU. Freedom from the EU is now becoming a popular movement across Europe. We will not be alone in changing our relationship with the EU – and this can only be a good thing.

We thank you all for your support during our campaign to Get Britain Out. We will be continue campaign to make sure the Government upholds the referendum result. We will not rest until Britain is finally and completely free of our EU membership. The British people have spoken and we will ensure the Government does not ignore them.

We are celebrating our own Independence Day and hope the Government will make June 23rd a Bank Holiday – and we can barely disguise our joy in anticipation.
