Callcredit studied the habits of more than 37million* households and consumers on its ‘Green & Ethical’ database to reveal how people in different areas think and act upon environmental and ethical concerns in their daily lives. It reveals that on average four per cent of UK homes rely on renewable energy for all or part of their energy requirements but this rises to 12 per cent in the South East.

Yorkshire and the West Midlands follow with five per cent then the figure falls to just two per cent for those in London, East Anglia and the North East, and less than one and a half per cent of homes in Northern Ireland rely on renewable energy.

The data also reveals that on average two and a half per cent of people in the UK claim to be real life eco-warriors with the majority of these saying they recycle everything possible, have compost heaps, use water butts to conserve natural resources, grow their own fruit and vegetables and drive a fuel efficient car. This rises to more than eight per cent in the South East but Northern Ireland fared badly again with less than one per cent claiming to consider the environment in everything they do.

Chris McDonald Managing Director of Data Solutions at Callcredit Information Group, said: “This data shows there are significant regional differences when it comes to how people embrace environmental issues. Most areas closely mirror the national average but in the South East almost one in 10 people are real life eco-warriors and homes in this area are almost three times more likely to use renewable energy than anywhere else which undoubtedly makes it the green capital of the UK.”
